<FATE>
A fleeting moment of fate becomes a value that endures within life. Lee Sang-yong draws meaning from objects shaped by time, translating their latent potential into a new sculptural language. The objects he works with—once created for human use—carry traces of labor, thought, and function. An inkstone bears the imprint of hands that once engaged with it, while fragments of metal recall their former structural roles. Having fulfilled their purpose, these objects are often discarded, shifting from utility to obsolescence. Yet it is precisely at this point that Lee’s work begins.
Rather than erasing the passage of time, Lee reveals it. Marks of use, worn surfaces, and subtle irregularities are not imperfections to be concealed, but records of time and fate embedded within the object. His intervention does not overwrite these traces, but brings them into a new context, allowing the object to enter into renewed relationships and acquire new meaning. Working across diverse materials and formats, Lee constructs layered visual fields where different temporalities and material qualities intersect. His compositions resist fixed imagery; instead, they unfold as fluid scenes shaped by shifting densities and rhythms. As the viewer’s gaze moves, new connections and interpretations gradually emerge.
Textures, repeated lines, and fragmented images function not merely as formal elements, but as sensory triggers that evoke the passage of time. The accumulated layers of material and gesture transform the act of viewing into an experience, where past and present converge with the viewer’s own perception.
For Lee Sang Yong, an encounter with an object is an act of fate—one that extends beyond a single direction. Relationships unfold organically, linking artist and object, object and artwork, and artwork and viewer. From the quiet depth of an inkstone to the dynamic imagery emerging from musical scores, his work reactivates multiple layers of time within the present, passing them on to others. Ultimately, Lee’s practice reveals how what was once considered obsolete can be reactivated as a source of aesthetic and sensory value. Beyond reuse or transformation, his work proposes a renewed way of seeing time, material, and existence itself.
