Epilogue

일상의 그릇이 평면으로 환원되어 공간에 설치된다면?

컵, 접시, 주전자 같이 일상적인 도자기가 2차원으로 환원되어 벽면에 설치되면 더 이상 음식을 담아내는 기능을 하지 못한다. 그림처럼 납작해진 그릇들은 3차원에서만큼 위태로워 보이지는 않지만 여전히 시각적으로는 불안한 느낌을 가지고 있다. 나는 이런 과정을 통해 생활 오브제들에게 생명력을 부여하고 좀 더 그들이 하는 이야기에 귀 기울이고자 하였다. 그럼으로써 도자 정물화의 개념을 넘어, 오브제 스스로 끓어 넘치거나 물방울을 흩날리는 것 같은 상상 속에서만 가능한 이야기 구조를 부여하여 건축적 공간 안에 살아 숨 쉬는 정물 설치작업으로 발전시킬 수 있었다. 주방에서 음식을 담아내는 보조적인 역할을 하는 그릇들이 고유의 기능과 역할을 잊고 공간의 주인공이 되는 것이다. 도자기로 공간에 그림을 채워 넣는 일, 그것이 지금까지 내 작업의 변하지 않는 주제였다.

〈landscape〉시리즈에서는 집이라는 공간을 상자의 전개도처럼 펼쳐 재구성하고, 그 안에 실내의 오브제들을 배치하였다. 입체였던 공간이 평면으로 환원되면서 시간은 한 장면으로 응축되고, 일상의 사물들은 새로운 풍경의 일부가 된다. 이후 작업은 형태와 기법의 치환으로 이어졌다. 조선 백자 항아리의

기형에 웨지우드의 제스퍼 웨어 기법을 입히는 식으로, 동양과 서양의 요소가 한 작품 안에서 만나는 실험을 거듭하였다. 이러한 치환의 시도는 평면뿐 아니라 입체 항아리의 형태로도 자연스럽게 변주되어왔다.

조선 백자 주병의 철화 끈무늬에서 모티브를 얻은 〈tied: hold and move〉시리즈에서, 끈은 시대와 공간을 넘어 존재했던 동서양의 도자 기형과 장식을 한데 묶어주는 매개가 되었다. 한국의 전통 자기, 서양의 명품 도자에서 차용한 기형과 장식이 한 화면 안에서 만나 하나의 그림을 이룬다. 시공간을 달리하던 도자의 역사가 그렇게 하나로 모인다. 이런 이야기들은 공간 안에서 다이내믹한 움직임 뒤에 잠시 쉬어 가는 〈on t he table〉시리즈, 그리고 큰 풍경의 한 부분인 오브제들로 변주된다.

이번 전시에서는 서로 다른 공간—동양과 서양, 서로 다른 시간—과거와 현재, 도자기의 역사와 작가가 변화해 온 시간이 한 공간에서 만난다.

신동원(b.1972)

A flattened teapot is affixed to the wall. At the tip of its tilted spout, the movement of water appears frozen just before it spills. Nearby, a slightly opened drawer reveals a glimpse of its interior. Plates, cups, and handled vessels lean in different directions, seemingly suspended across the wall. On the verge of spilling yet never spilling, trembling yet never fully collapsing, these objects remain poised upon the surface, creating an unfamiliar scene detached from the logic of everyday balance.

Shin Dongwon uses one of the most solid materials—ceramic—to create scenes that feel remarkably fluid. Stripped of their volume, these objects lose their original function while acquiring a new sense of tension, beginning to breathe across the wall like a living landscape. Their forms appear to waver and twist until the very moment of completion, revealing unexpected ruptures and instabilities. Only those moments that ultimately endure remain upon the wall, holding both uncertainty and equilibrium at once.

There is no fixed frame within Shin’s practice. Each object becomes a pictorial plane, and the very act of arranging forms within space becomes the structure of the narrative itself. The wall no longer functions as a simple backdrop but as an expanded field where different times and sensibilities connect and unfold. What begins at a single point gradually spreads outward, guiding the viewer’s gaze across the entire space rather than allowing it to settle in one place. Individual forms drift loosely across the wall, each carrying its own tension, yet at certain moments they come together to form a unified landscape. Within these compositions, Eastern and Western sensibilities coexist with natural ease, allowing different temporalities and spatial experiences to quietly intersect upon a single surface.

Decade: Rewind captures the moment when forms and sensations long held within memory begin to move once again. The flow of more than a decade of the artist’s practice unfolds gradually across the wall, continuing into the present through the viewer’s gaze. Droplets that gather yet never fall, openings that reveal yet release nothing, forms that tilt yet never collapse—following these traces transforms familiar objects and landscapes into something newly perceived. In this way, Decade: Rewind gently rewinds overlooked moments of time, bringing them back into the present.
